RAILWAY APPEALS
ANOTHER 137 CASES DISMISSED
SOME INTERESTING FIGURES.
More railway" appeals were disposed of by the Third Wellington Military Service Board to-day, and, incidentally, a statement was made by the Assistant General Manager (Mr. R. W. M'Viily) which is of importance, considering the criticism to which the Department has beeii subjected.
Mr. M'.Yilly stated that arrangements had been made. for the release of an additional 137 men, which cleared up the 400 drawn in the first railway ballot. The Department did' not }isk for any further-delay in theso casts. Tlie Chairman (Mr. H. J. Beawick) : Each man has the right of a personal appeal, i Mr.'.:M'3 7illy:. We 'understand., that. Each"man'will be notified. Proceeding, Mr/M'Villy stated that the total number of men appealed for by the Department since November, 1916, was,. 1285. Of those cases 509 had been dismissed by the Military Service Board (including the first 400 in the railway ballot), and 52 had been withdrawn. In 215 cases no appeals were lodged, and in addition 210 mew,- who enlisted ■ voluntarily; had - been granted leave. It would be seen, therefore, that 986 men had left the. service since November, 1915.' ■■ The Chairman thought that the figures should be published, so tha,t the public ■would understand what the Department was doing. The board dismissed the 137 appeals placed before it, with the provision that the personal appeal should be lodged within seven days. The men concerned come from all parts of New Zealand..
