MONITOR IN THE GULF OF TRIESTE
ITALIAN GUNS BEAT ALL RECORDS
ROME, 25th August. The Tribuna's naval correspondent pays a tribute to the excellent work of the British and Italian monitors in the Gulf of Trieste. The vessels threw hundreds of heavy shells on vital Austrian defensive works. The Austrians admit that the Italian Navy has beaten all records with its heavy guns. While the. Carso struggle was proceeding, the English and Italian monitors, escorted by numerous torpedo-boats, anti-submarine motor-boats, and aeroplanes, proceeded up the gulf, dodged the minefields, and opened fire on Roveici, Hermada, and the Trieste docks. Meanwhile Italian aeroplanes bombed the Austrian Fleet, goading the Austrian airmen into the air, but the latter funked a fight. The Austrian commander, finding Trieste within range of the new ifalian guns, ordered, the airmen to destroy the monitors at all costs. The Austrians ascended and threw bombs, but without result.
