TRAMWAYS MILITARY BAND

Several would-be patrons -were unable to gain admission to His Majesty's last night, on the occasion of thle recital by the Military Band of the Wellington Municipal Tramways. The concert was voted one .of the best yet hejld, and the players are to be commended for the manner'in which they rose ito, the possibilities of several of.the selections, particularly the grand operatic compositiqn by Saint Saens, "Henry VIII." It vim a splendid performance, and the classical! symphony was a fine piece of work. The instrumentation was perfect, and t|ie modulation to suit the composer's nvpod -vas of distinct merit. Another well-played selection was the overture "Btradella," while the "L'Entente Cordiale" march was given with rousing vim, In the dainty gavdtte number, "Passnon Flowers," the saxophones showed .up well, and the item was a particularly pleasing one. The descriptive fantasin, "'lies Soldats Tres-gais Retournes," arranged by J. J. Lawson, was unique in thime, and played with abandon and a nice balance. The whole programme was -artistic, and the band excelled itself. Mr. G. W. Bowes, conductor, wielded his baton' in his usual efficient style, and secured some fine tonal effects. The solosistsi were Madame Anderson, who sang ''Sweet Spirit, Hear My Prayer," and, again, "0! Dry Those Tears." Her contralto voice is smooth and sweet, and. sh<p sings with expression. Mr.' Eugene Qssipoff sang "Friend of Mine" and "Will.-p'-the-Wisp" with good effect, his fine bairitone voice being well suited to this sekietion. Both singers were recalled. Mr. A. Crump officialted at the piano as accompanist.
