WOMEN IN PRINT.

The gift of the sum of £30, proceeds of the autograph quilt made by the Wellington Spinsters' Club, has been acknowledged by the (juartermaster of No. 1 New Zealand Stationary Hospital. The money was spent on comforts for' the wounded arrivals, and all were grateful to the club for its beneficence.

Violet Day in Christchurcb realised £865. Several novelties were introduced, and the day was a remarkable one in the annals of patriotic ventures in the Southern city.

The y.W.C.A. would be glad to hear of boarding accommodation for business women who prefer to be in. a private •home. Enquiries are often made for such accommodation, especially by soldiers' wives.

The Worser Bay M*e\liodist Literary, Debating, and Social Club passed a pleasant evening, when tlio ladies of. the club entertained the other members. Those contributing items were :—Misses J. Eggers (monologue), M. Manthel (recitation), C. Eggers (song), and Mrs. Moxham and .ahss D. Hall (duet). Several games were played during the evening.

"Country Day" at the Red Cross Shop yesterday proved a, big success, nearly £60 being realised by sales. The Johnsonville branch of-the W.N.R-. were in charge, and the excellent display of wholesome goods was a credit to them. Country produce was in abundance, and the vegetables and home-made jams, pickles, etc., were temptingly exhibited. There were cakes, sweets, and flowers, which found ready .sales, and the fancy work was a decided feature- of the display. Misses Cooper and Moss had supplied a wonderful array of flowers. The ladies in charge of. the various stalls were : Mcsdames Bethune, Kirk, Hamlin, Howard, Thompson, Robertson, .Redwood, Jones, and Richardson. Mis. One of many indications of the rapid growth, of Kelburn is the marked increase in the attendance at the Sunday School of St. Michael and All Angles. A little over a year ago there were 60 scholars on the roll, and that number has now been doubled. .As the Bey. A. W. Payne remarked at a concert given in the schoolroom lafit evening, the children have set a splendid example to their elders by the enthusiasm with ■which, they have entered into the projectto assist in raising the money required for providing a new church and improved Sunday School accommodation. , They had raised £42 for what, was known as the Children's Bantistry Fund. The idea -was that the children by their own efforts should raise enough money' to provide not only the font but the comer of the chivreh in which the font would be built. The entertainment and sale of sweets last night should result in a. substantial addition to this fund. Miss i Edwards, who had trained the children had good reason to be pleased with the "result. Ths girls in chorus s^ng- "Threo i Little Maids," a lullaby and "Three Maids j of Lee," in all of which the performers, I .appropriately attired, acquitted themselves well. Miss Given Brabazon played a pianoforte solo, and Misses Olive and Audrey Sutcliffe two duets. "The Tulip and Rose" duet was sweetly sung by Misses Phyllis Gray and Mabel Earlo, Miss Reni Johnson also scored a success with-"Starlight," recitations were given by Misses Eileen Penrose and Margaret' Webb, the boys' chorus sang "The Long, Long Trail," and Messrs. E. Lawson, Wynne Waikins, and Lawson also, assisted. -\ The schoolroom was crowded for the occasion.

The Catholic Knitting Guild 1 of Wellington is an industrious body of workers, as will be seen from its recent activities. As a result of a mouth's diligent labour, the guild has handed to the Bed Cross 86 pairs of hand-knitted socks.

A meeting of the Society for the -Protection of Women and Children was" held on Friday afternoon, Mrs. W. A. Evans presided. There were present Mosdames G. Ponsonby, A. Hoby, Griffiths, and Miss Pax-lane and Dr. Ada P«aterfion. A number of cases, which had-been investigated, were reported upon; others were being attended to. Mrs, Scoble Cornish, of Seatoun, took a concert party up to the Victoria. Military Hospital on Thursday evening, the items being very much appreciated by the patients. Mr. Szcness cmavtet con■tiibuted two'items; the Misses Alexander, Fuller, Hume, and M'lnerney gave several songs and recitations; Mr. Brown .and Mr. O'Connor sang; and Mr. .J. Clark recited a humorous selection. Features of the evening were a violin -solo by Mri Szenes and a Hungarian, dance (a fine study in characterisation) ;by Miss Carwell Cook, of Wadestown.

Miss Olwen Lloyd George, elder daughter of Britain's Prime Minister, lias been married to Capt. T. J. CareyEvans, M.C., I.M.S. Wounded men from Millbank- Hospital formed a guard of honour. The service was given in AVelsh, and no reception was held.

An Auckland wedding of interest was that recently solsnuiised between Miss

Bita Carlaw and Mr. Rupert Sloman, both well-known young people. Yen. Archdeacon Calder performed the ceremony. The bridegroom is a prominent hockey and cricket player, and is a eon of Mr. Sloman, for many years one of the roasters in the Auckland Training School.

An American lady aviator, Mrs. Pierce, has established a flying school at Mineola, U.S. She is an experienced airwoman, and endeavoured just recently to enlist in the U.S. Aviation Corps, but was unsuccessful. She is engaged giving free instruction to young kdjes who we willing to join an aviation co"rps, which, when its members become proficient, will be offered to the U.S. Government.

A health- talk, entitled " Some Mistaken Ideas," will be given in the Y.W.C.A. club rooms, Fowlds's Buildings, Herbert-street, to-night, at 8 V o'clock. These lectures, conveying as they do so much practical information on " How to Keep Healthy," are growing increasingly popular, and the association owes muoli to the leading doctors for the interest and ready 'help given to members.

Miss Luke (niece of the Mayor of Wellington) is to shortly take charge of the. school at Lake Coleridgo, reports the Sun.

At the service in the Y.W.C.A. club i"oom to-morrow afternoon, at 4.15, Mr. A. Vamey, national general secretary fi>r the V.M.C.A., will give the addTess. This will be the first opportunity the association has had of hearing Mr. Varney since his return from the war centre. .

Mrs. H. R. Smith, <*£ Christchurch, is in Wellington to meet her son, Cedric, who is returning from the front.

Mrs. Margaret Lowe, one of the pioneers wdio came to Auckland; -with the Duchess of Argyle and Jone Gifford settlers, died recently at Mt. Albert. She was born in 1838 at Paisley, Scotland, being a daughter of the lat« Mr. -Joseph Craig, who founded J. J. Craig-, Ltd.
