On Friday next, at 10 a.m., the Magisterial enquiry regarding the collision between the tug Terawhiti and ttie coastal steamer Inver carglll in the Wellington harbour some time ago will be held

l'he good performance put up by the schooner rigged scow Hazel Kepton, which recently went from Lyttelton to Greymouth in fine time, is favourably commented upon by the Greymouth Star. It states:—"She left Lyttelton at noon on Sunday, and arrived off the Greyraoutb bar on Tuesday night," covering the. journey from port to port ia 63 hours. A steamer sailing at 9 knots takes 40 hours to do the trip. The average speed of the Hazel Repton was 6 3-7 knots. The scow brought 1200 sacks, and loads timber for Miramar. She was towed into Greymouth on Wednesday morning." She should be in Wellington in a couple of weeks

HINEMOA RETURNS

last evening the Government steamer Hinemoa arrived back in Wellington from her trip to the southern lighthouses. As a very heavy ssa was running, no attempt was made to land at Kahurangi Point lighthouse, but a call ■was made at Farewell Spit, Stephen Island, and The Brothers. Next week soxne engineroom repairs will be carried out on the Hinemoa at Wellington

Salmond and Spraggon notify that the Eunice will sail for Havclock and Greymouth on Monday Owing to a late arrival at Auckland tlis Monowai, leaving the northern port to-day, will come to "Wellington direct instead of calling at ■way ports as usual. The vessel should be here on Monday, and is to sail on Tuesday next for I/yttelton and Dunedin

Since tho beginning of the war the New Zealand Shipping Company lias lost three passenger steamers out of seven owned by it. These were:—The Rotorua, the Tongariro, and the Turakina. Two cargo steamers of the same company have been lost—the Otaki and the Kaipara. The Tongariro could take 86,000 sheep, tht Rotorua 102,000, the ■ Turakina 128,000, the Otaki 98,000, and the Kaipara 97,000. The total number of carcases lost is 511,000

It was stated yesterday by the local agents for the Northern Steamship Company that the Barawa's trip from Onehunga to New P'ymouth had been abandoned, as the vessel is to leave Onehunga to-day for Auckland, where she will undergo her annual overhaul and survey. For a fortnight the Rimu will take her place in the Onehunga-New Plymouth service
