LOSS OF A LIGHTER

NAUTICAL COURT'S DECISION.

(II TBLBGRAPB.—PRBSS"ASSOCIATION.)

WANGANUI, 24th August. The Nautical Court of Enquiry into the loss of the lighter Dorset off Kai Iwi Beach on 2nd August gave its reserved decision to-day. The Court found the uccident was not contributed to by neglect by the harbour dfScials nor any defect of the port. Having regard to the proved depth of water, the Court was unable to say what object the vessel struck. The master of the lighter Shamrock, Captain Jas. Irvine, committed a grave error of judgment by not going to the assistance of the Dorset when returning to port, and there was unaccountable delay in the lighter Thistle going to the Dorset's assistance. Captain Bertie, of tiio Dorset, was exonerated from blame. The Court made no recommendation as to costs.
