WAR FUNDS COLLECTING COMMITTEE
An amalgamation for patriotic purposes has been achieved, whereby the War Relief Association, the Red Cross Association, Navy League, and Commercial Travellers' Association have formed a united _ body, called "The War Funds Collecting Committee." -It is proposed to appftul for funds for Red Cross "Our Day" funds, BLind Soldiers' and Sailors' Fund, such appeal to terminate on 18th October.
The chairman of the new. body is the Mayor (Mr. J. P./ Luke, C.M.G.). Messrs. T. ■ Young and M. A. Carr are vice-chaimon, and the trustees are the Mayor and Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, M.L.C. The first attraction will be "Paddy's Market," on Friday and Saturday, 21st and 22nd September, at which the various patriotic bodies will have stalls. An- appeal is made to those who have produce, old clothes, furniture, old. gold and silver, or anything else of a marketable nature, to send along to help the good cause. Arrangements are being made for free freight on the railways and steamer."::. All gifts should .be sent in not later than Thursday, 20tK September.
It is confidently expected that a large sum of _ money will be realised in connection with this scheme. The commercial travellers, whose originality and enthusiasm are always a feature of patriotic tournaments, are entering heartily into the scheme, and the assistance promised by other bodies is such that success is assured.
A meeting of the Entertainment and Side Lines Committee is being called at tho Red Cross Depot on Monday night, foi* the purpose of completing arrangements.
