BIG DECREASE LAST YEAR.

: The Hon. Arthur Myers, Minister of Customs, referring to the annual production of beer in the Dominion, states that a return has been prepared giving the quantity produced during the financial year ended 31sfc March, 1917, which shows a. decrease of 125,801 gallons, as against the same period of the previous year. The total quantity of beer produced , for the year ' ended 31st March, 1916, was 11,354,357 'gallons, and for the year ended 31st March, 1917, 11,228,556 gallons, the decrease being 125,801 gailons, or slightly over 1 per cent, decrease as compared with 1916. If the same rate ;of increase in the quantity produced had been maintained as the average annual increase of the previous three normal years, it is estimated that the optput for the last financial year would have been 11,760,000 gallons.
