LATE SPORTING

DEATH OF EL GALLO.

Mr. W. J. Ralph, of Auckland, who is at present on a business visit to Wellington, received telegraphic advice this morning that the well-known steeplechaser El Gallo (Spalpeen—Lobelia) had dropped dead at Elterslie. El Gallo was one of the most successful performers over jumps in the Dominion. His record of winning the Great Northern Hurdles and Steeplechase two years in succession is unlikely to be equalled. When Mr. Ralph left Auckland the son of Spalpeen was in good health, and he was looking forward to the gelding adding to his good record. t A Pcess Association - telegram states that. El Gallo died suddenly after working at half-pace at Ellerslie. .
