COMPULSORY HOME SERVICE

A religious objector, Private Arthur Henry Varnham, detained by compulsion on homo service in Trentham Camp, appealed for release from the "Military machine" before the Third Wellington Military Service Board to-day. He stated that he belonged to no particular sect, although he held the same beliefs as a Quaker. He had been connected with the Quakers for six or seven years, but he had never been received into their fold. He wns a carpenter by trade, and had been classed C 2, unfit for active service. Capt. Baldwin, Military -Representative, explained that- Varnham was one of the conscientious objectors who refused to be medically examined. He was accordingly arrested and put into camp. He was then examined and passed C 2, and retained on home service. Varnham said he would be very pleased to do home service work under civil control,' but as he did not come under section 18 of the Act this could not be arranged. The appeal was dismissed.
