THE TURF

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(tt "SIR LANCELOT.")

The Spring Meeting of the Dannevirke Racing Club will be held on 12th September, and the Annual Meeting of the Dannevirke Hunt Club on loth September. Owners and trainers are reminded by advertisement in another colum that nominations for both meetings close on Saturday next at 9 p.m. with Mr. 8.. Takle, secretary.

The proposal to send Analogue to Sydney for the Maitland Cup has evidently been abandoned, as his name appears among the entries for the Marton Handicap.

The two Grand National winners are both engaged at Marton. Sleight of Hand is in the Marton Handicap and Master Strowan in the Rangitikei Steeplechase. Advices from Melbourne state that the V.R.C. Committee has had a Totalisator Bill drafted on the best lines of the .New South Wales and South Australian measures. Should this Bill receive the approval of V.R.C. members at the annual meeting to be held on 6th August, it will be submitted to Parliament aa a private measure at the first favourable opportunity. Most of the North Island horses ■which competed at the Grand National Meeting returned home yesterday. Twelve month® ago the Auckland-bred Troublesome won the Adelaide Grand National .Steeplechase. On Saturday last another New Zealand-bred one in Westendale won the Grand National Hurdle Race at Adelaide. When Sir Laddo and the Manawatu Stud Co.'s mares were §u-ehased by Mr. R. C. Allen, of New mth Wales, about five years back, the atrons included Windlass, who was in foal to Birkenhead. The produce was Westendale, who .is now five years old: Windlass was by Euroclydon—Miss Betty (dam of the smart sprinter Ostiak), by Chainshat —Hermione, dam of Fanna (by Maxim), * who was the dam of Garmoran and Stephanie. Hermione was by Cadogan—Helena (dam of Burd ; Helen, Seraph, Ilium, Iliad, and other performers), by Traducer, from imported Strenua (dam of Strenuous, Milord, King George,-and Georgina, dam of Jack Pot). While at the Manawatu Stud Windlass prochiced Ladis, Ladino, Lady Love, and Windlace, all sired by Sir Laddo. Windlace joined her dam.at the Dartmoor Stud, where she bad produce by Antonio and Psddingtor.. The Trentham-trained horses Mount Victoria, The Golfer, Matilda, Coalition, Silver Monarch, Eoumania, Menelaus, Pall Mall, Cooing, Mascot, Ohukwana, Bairnsdale, and Arihia have been engaged at .the Marton Meeting. St. Elmn was the unlucky performer during the steeplechase meeting just closed. He was second in the Great Northern Steeplechase, third in the Great Northern . Hurdles, and second in the •Grand National and Beaufort Steeplechases.

,The old-time Manchester Cup, run on 6th August, was won by Mr. Sol Joel's Blue Danube (St. Denis—Blue Gown .II.).

Among the two-year-olds ia training at Caulfield are Susarion (Comedy King— Artillerie);, The attempt made to convert Coalition into a steeplechaser has so far not been very successful. He will get another opportunity to score at Marton. If not successful there he will probably be thrown out of training.

Sandy Paul walked off the boat yesterday ' morning looking nice and fresh after Ms exertions at Bicearton. Percy Johnson told me that t%e gelding would probably bo a competitor at Marion. Mount Victoria was on t'lie track at Trentham yesterday afternoon. He ap"pears to have thrown off the soreness that prevented him from starting on the contending day of the Grand National Meeting. He is under orders for Morton, where he is engaged in the Hack Hurdle Handicap. The field engaged includes Combustion, who was successful twelve months' ago.

Chakwana has made, a splendid recovery from the injury that she met with to her eye some weeks back. She will probably make her first appearance this season at Marton. John Lowe reminded me yesterday that the Hierarch mare generally races .■ well when fresh. She won the first time out both as a four and five-year-old. Assistant Starter 11. Blak« gave the local two-yeai'-olds some practice at the barrier yesterday afternoon. Bonville, a Boniform filly in J. Ayres's stable, was spurted in company with Rene Epse (Rokeby—Elaine], a full sister to Mascot, and a half sister, by Provocation, to Marsina.h. The .three latter are trained by C. Pritohard. The Rokeby and Mar-

tian fillies are owned by Mr. Jas. Fuller, of Seddon.

J. W. Lowe has engaged six of the Endeavour Lodge- lot at Marton. It has not yet been decided which of them will be sent, but probably four will make the journey. Cutting out the Wanganui Spring Meating will have a beneficial effect at Marton with trainers who wish to race their charges early in tho season.

Silver Monarch will probably compete in the steeplechase events at Marton and Dannevirke. He will probably be accompanied by Trickery to *he lar>( named fixture.

Roumania and Pall Mall, who are no 1 trained by their owner, will represent Mr. Whitney at Marton;

Sliss de Val, who is a good doer, looks none the worse for the racinp at Riccarton. Some of the members of J. Ayres's team will go to Masterton. With the exception of Royal Academy, tho Masterpiece filly, who' is somewhat backward, they will probably all be racing at Trentham in October. Probation lightened' up with the two races at Riccarton and has been having an easy time since. The half-dozen two-year-olds in H. Telford's stable have all wintered well and will be Teady to race early in the season.

The Otaki Racing Club has consi9ered a letter from the Wairqjapa Club asking that the former forego its one-day' meeting in September and transfer it to the latter body, the Wairarapa Club to reciprocate next year. The local club, however, has decided to" carry on this year, and has fixed 24th September, for its meeting day. In view of the fixture a deal of work' is being accomplished on the course,' where the totalisator house, etc., are being further improved.
