"SCREENED" AND SLACK.

TRADES COUNCIL'S CRITICISM.

At the last meeting of the Trades Council matters in connection with the State coal supply were discussed. Delegates stated that there had been numerous complaints from State customers that though "screened" coal was etill offered for sale at screened coal prices the coal when delivered was found to contain in many eases as much as 50 per cent, of slack. The opinion, was expressed by the council that it appeared as if an attempt were being maile to damage the enterprise in _the eyes of the public. The council decided to protest against this state of affairs, and also to enter a protest against the action of the Government in supplying coal to the Gas Company when supplies were required by the public, and when the enterprise was established for the benefit of the private consumer.
