ANNUAL MEETING ACCOUNT-

ANTS' INSTITUTE.

About twenty members attended the twenty-fourth annual meeting of the Incorporated Institute of Accountants of New Zealand, held yesterday. • Mr. H. D. Vickery (vice-president) presided in the absence, through illness, of the president (Mr. C. P. Powles). The annual report of the council stated that during the year 16 new associates had been admitted to membership of the institute by virtue of their having passed the examination conducted by the University on behalf of the New Zealand Society of Accountants. The membership of the institute at the beginning of the year was 377, consisting of 201 fellows and 167 associates. At the end of the year the number of members on the register was 382 (a record for the institute), and consisted of 216 fellows and 166 associates. Five fellows and one associate died during the years, three of 'thenv'in the defence of their country— Messrs. F. A. Allen and J. G. Foster (fellows) and Mr H. Kershaw (associate). At the last aunaal meeting it was decided to renew for one year the grant of £100 to tho University Colleges in the four centres through the Society of Accountants. This amount had been paid during the year and brought the amount paid for this purpose to £600. The report added that it was doubtful whether an adequate return had. resulted.

The annual statement of accounts showed that at the end of the financial year the' institute had £350 invested on first mortgage of freehold property, £300 on fixed deposit, £100 in war certificates, and a credit balance in cash of £28 4s 9d. The excess of income over ordinary expenditure for the year was £120 3s Bd, but on account' of the grant of £100 to the New Zealand Society of Accountants towards the subsidy to the University Colleges, this was reduced to £20 3s Bd. The accumulated funds now stand at £773 15s 9d. The outstanding subscriptions (owed by one member only) amount to £1 lls 6d; £36 15s had been remitted on account of members on active service for subscriptions due for the last two years. Eeferenoe was made by the chairman to the great public work done by leading accountants in England in connection with the war, and instanced Sir James Plender and Mr. Leever in particular. He urged that there was scope for accountants here in New Zealand if the Government would give the opportunity. Mr. Powles was re-elected president and Mr. Vickery vice-president. Messrs. W. W. Bruce (Auckland), H. Bicknell (Christchurch), P. Barr (Dunedin), and E. J. Harvey (Blenheim) were- elected members of the council.
