ENEMY ADMITS LOSS OF LANGEMARCK
POSITIONS OVERRUN BY THE ALLIES
?■>■] LONDON, 17th August. •*/',; A German official report states : The second day of the Battle of Flanders ,'.'/' lias been decided in our favour. The British and French forces yesterday morn- "■' ing attacked on a front cf thirty kilometres (nineteen miles), from the Yser %;-» to the Lys, over-ran our advanced posts on the Yser Canal near Driegrachten, '?.: captured ground northward and eastward of Bixschoote, penetrated near Lange- ■ ,;", marck, and advanced as far as Poolcapelle. We recaptured Langemarck and ■~'ii other positions. The enemy also penetrated near St. Julien at numerous points >'' southward as far as Warneton. A,\ We regained the positions we lost near Loos. We took 600 prisoners at ■ ':'.;• Caurierss Wood (on the right bank of the Meuse). We shot down sixteen of "•• the enemy's aeroplanes. » *: t LONDON, 18th August. ''.; ' A German official report states : The artillery dnel has increased in in- ';.," tensity on the coast and north-east of Ypres. The enemy launched during the ]■.'.':') afternoon a strong surprise local attack astride the Boesinghe-Staden railway, / ,'- with the result that we lost Langemarck after severe fighting. We occupied ''.''■;■■ a flat bend in front of the village. We brought down t*enty-six aeroplanes. "A SERIES OF MIS.STATEMENTS" '■\j LONDON, 17th August. • L. The Press Bureau states : To-day's German official reports contain a series .■',;■': of misstatements. It is not true that we attacked between the Ypres-Menin ■-,> road and the Lys River. The Ypres-Menin road was our right flank. The V-V ' enemy did not attempt to recover Langemarck A British staff officer from r?:: Langemarck at six o'clock this evening reported : "We hold Langemarck and j-J also a considerable length of the German position eight hundred yards to the '' -"-: northward." The reference in the German communique to Poelcapello is ob■v^'iij viously intended to convey the impression that the British failed to reach an ,■*;;■) imaginary distant objective. It is sufficient to state that the British gained all '";»'•{ their objectives northward of Lens on Wednesday, and northward of St. Julien oV\i on Thursday. The statement that four Canadian divisions attacked on Wed- :';<•) nesday is an exaggeration.
