PREMATURE ANNOUNCEMENT

ANNOYANCE AT THE VATICAN

(ACBTBALIAN-NEW ZEALAND OABLB ASSOCIATION.)

LONDON, 15th August. The Daily Telegraph's Rome correspondent states that the Vatican is annoyed at the premature publicity that has been given to the Pope's Peace Note, which was intended to be issued without any earlier announcement, so as to avoid adverse comment. The Papal nuncios of every belligerent country have been for months making secret enquiries regarding the attitude of the belligerents. Their investigations attracted attention, causing the Vatican repeatedly to deny rumours regarding the issue of a peace manifesto. REASON FOR INTERVENTION (Received August 17, 8.30 a.m.) COPENHAGEN, 16th August. It is reported in Berlin that the Pope's intervention is in response to appeals by neutrals.
