John Robinson (Jack) Binns, wireless operator of the White Star liner Republic in the disaster on 23rd January, 1909, who saved hundreds of lives through his calls for aid, joined the British Royal Flying Corps at the recruiting station in New York in July, and left immediately for a training station in Canada

KAPITI. ARRIVES

Leaving Wanganui on Tuesday morning early the Kapiti struck heavy weather when a few hours out, and as she was running fairly light it was considered advisable, when a good way down the coast, to run for shelter. Consequently the vessel put into shore close to Titahi Bay, where she remained till the sea moderated. The Kapiti arrived in Wellington shortly after 11 o'clock this morning, and will sail again this evening for Wanganui

HUIA LEAVES NEW PLYMOUTH

A telegram from New Plymouth states that the schooner Huia, which has been discharging powder at that port, left there at 1 o'clock this afternoon for Wellington. She will probably arrive to-morrow
