KEEN AND SUNNY

After the buffetting which Wellington lias received of late, the change this morning to spring-like weather is all the more delightful and welcome. Today the sides have been clear and sunny, the winds have died down until there is left only a whisper to ruffle the surface of the harbour, and the keen, bracing tingle in the air is as refreshing as a draught of clear spring water. At daybreak, however, the keenness was a little too pronounced, and caused many a New Year resolution to rise with the laTk to be rudely broken. A heavy frost occurred during the night, and the guage at the Meteorological Office recorded se^en degrees on the grass. In the Hutt Valley the whole countryside was covered with a mantle of white, and, with the first rays of the sun glinting on it, the sight was described as exceptionally fine. The improvement appears to be general all over the Dominion, with the exception of Gisborne, where squally and showery weather still prevails. At the present time, the prospects for the next day or two are according to the forecast, considerably brighter than has been the case of late. A very cold night may be expected, with frosts inland, and hard frosts on the east coast of the South Island. Moderate south-easterly breezes will probably change to easterly northward of Kawhia and East Cape, easterlies may be expected locally, and northerlies generally.
