MILK STATION

ADELAIDE-ROAD SITE FAVOURED

This morning the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), and Councillors R. A. Wright, J. Castle, J. 0. Shorland, and W. H. Bennett (members of the Public Health Committee), made a further step in the direction of selecting a site for the municipal milk-clearing station. Accompanied by the City Engineer (Mr; W. H. Morton), the Chief Railway Engineer (Mr. F. W. Mac Lean), and Messrs. W. Strand and H. A. Ward (Dairy Farmers' Association), they first visited Te Aro Railway Station, which had been suggested as a building which might be used as a temporary clearingstation. Mr. Mac Lean pointed out, however, that the station building, and practically the whole area occupied by the covered platforms, was to be used for Defence Department purposes. There was land available, but members of the committee thought it would be unwise to erect a temporary structure, which would not fit in with the permanent building designed for the future.' The committee 2iext visited the site of the old tramway sheds, in Adelaideroad. Members present were favourably impressed with the possibilities of this site, which provides an ample area, and has frontages to three streets. It was decided to hold a meeting of the whole committee, to decide finally on a suitable site, and to suggest that the City Engineer bo instructed to arrange for the erection of a building which will be used for milk inspection in the meantime, and will afterwards fit in with the complete inspection and distribution scheme. Mr. E. H. Oliver, whose proposals for the inauguration of the mnnicipal milk venture have been adopted by the council, is to bo asked to come to Wellington for the purpose of consulting with the committee regarding details. In the meantime, attention will be given to the question of financing the portion of the scheme which, it is considered, ehoirid-be-pro-ceeded - with immediately..
