DISCHARGED SOLDIERS

WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT.

The excellent work being accomplish ed by the Discharged Soldiers' Information ' Department ia indicated in- the monthly report made available to-day by the Hon. A. L. Herdman (Minister in Charge of the Department). Tho tota-1 number of men on the register when the report was issued was 9396. Of this number 7730 cases have been disposed of, 1238 are under consideration, and 378 are not ready for action. The men who have work to return to, and men who have re-enlisted or returned to military duty, total 3374, the men placed in employment 1732, men- who have signed "assistance not required" 1824, left New Zealand or addresses cannot be ascertained 154, men who have not l'esponded to repeated communications 696, and at present on "employment wanted register" 214. Of the men who require work there are 68 in Auckland. 10 in Wellington, 24 in Christchureh, and 11 in Dunedin.
