STRIKERS.
The following was reported' from'*Ne»« castle on the 7th :— -
Practically all the. Newcastle .district tram, drivers and conductors axe out-l Their instructions to cease work werei brought by a courier, who arrisedl- by; steamer fron^ Sydney. The men on the early morning tram* were waiting for the news, and as»they!{ passed one another the greeting *?as,j "Are we loyal to the Government?** awft ' the Tesponse was, "I don't think!" Then men brought their trams into the«depot9\ and then left them, the services being^ suspended at 8 o'clock. A limited aer-i vice was run on the Wallsend and May-! ; field lines by v inspectors and conductors,! ' but it was decided' to suspend this at'4.3Qi p.m. ' The train services have also been»seri~' ously dislocated. Nearly. all the drivers* and firemen failed to turn-to this mom- : ing, and a curtailed programme has-been. 11 applied to the suburban lines,, inspectors taking the places of drivers. A number of the guards came out this afternoon, and at 2 o'clock several signalmen failed. to report for duty.
