HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLED

REPORT

The Department of Agriculture, Industries, and Commerce has received the following cablegram, dated London, 11th August, 1917, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand. (Note. — Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot). Meat.—-Heavy supplies of inferior and medium grades in poor demand, selling at omparatively low prices. Holders are anxious to 'sell before Government regulations regarding maximum prices are in force. All descriptions of frozen meat continue in good demand.' New Zealand mutton, per lb, Bsd; ewe mutton, BJ>d; Australian mutton, lOd; Argentine mutton, lOd; Argentine lamb, lid; New Zealand beef, no supplies available; Argentine beef, quotations are nominal—-hinds 14d, fores lO^d.

Butter.—Market continues 'firm owing jto continued small supplies. Danish butter, no supplies available; New Zealand stock are exhausted; Canadian, Irish creamery, Australian and Argentine are selling freely at maximum prices, 206» per cwt.; unsalted butter 3s more. Cheese.—Market continues firm. English Cheddar, per cwt., 1325; quantity of Australian, Canadian, New Zealand and States Hats has been released by order of the Government at 130s 8d on condition that retail price per lb must not exceed la 4d.

Hemp.—Manila hemp market continues firm. N.Z. market is quiet but steady. Quotations are nominal. N.Z. good fair on spot, £93 per ton ; .August tq October shipment, £92; N.Z. high point fair, £90; N.Z. fair on spot, £90; July to September shipment,. £89. Wheat.—Market remains as last reported. Difficult to find; buyers. Prices are unchanged. Oats.—Market quiet, prices »r» slightly weaker. Canadian, 62s 6dj American, 61a 6d.
