THE MEAT TRUST
DEFENSIVE ALLIANCE SUGGESTED
(IT TSIEORAPH.—PRBSB ASSOCIATION.)
DUNEDIN, 13th August. At the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, the retiring president, Mr. George Fenwick, referred to the menace of tho American Meat Trust, and suggested that a federation or defensive alliance of New Zealand freezing companies was required. He referred to a weakness in regard to the marketing of New Zealand meat, pointing out that while the companies mastered this end of the business they hardly touched the London end, whereas the Americans kept full control of both ends, thus getting the distributing and the retail profit, which New Zealand passed over to others. The association of freezing companies would require to be kept absolutely free of suspicion of foreign association. He hoped the report of the commission appointed to enquire into the maitter would lead to some effective steps to counteract the evil threatening the meat trade and producers.
