CHARGE AGAINST A RETURNED SOLDIER

Allegations of a serious nature were made against a returned soldier named Percy Gharles Tito in the Magistrate's Court,'before Mr. W. G. RiddeJl, S.M., to-day. Tite, for whom Mr. T. M. Wilford appeared, was charged with theft of £37 11s 9d, the property of the Government. It was alleged that the accused, who went away os a sergeant in the New Zealand Engineers, had overdrawn the amount duo to him. Tito, according to the evidence for the prosecution, left New Zealand in 1914, and then had pay-book No. 1. From November, 1915, to June, 1916, ho was in hospital. at Malta, and there had pay-book No. 2. The first paybook showed' the rate of pay to be 7s, divided into 3s pay and 4s allotment. No. 2 pay-book showed the rate at 7s without allotment. During six months at Malta he received £71, or payment at the rate of 7s per day. On: return, to New Zealand Tite presented No. 1 pay-book, which purported to show that no payments were made between November, 1915, and. June, 1916, whereas £71 had been-paid, and as the result the accused was paid £37 lls 9d in New Zealand. Tite pleaded not guilty to the charge, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was renewed.
