GAS TROUBLE
SUPPLIES STILL LIMITED.
Though efforts are, being made to bring about a settlement of the gas trouble, these so far have not been attended with success. The Conciliation Commissioner {Mr. W. H. Hagger) has been making enquiries, but the result of his discussions, with the parties is not yet avail-' able, He is arranging a meeting with the men, for this-evening. Meanwhile the company is carrying on with a volunteer staff reinforfced by a percentage of permanent.men who have offered their services. Up to the present the pressure has been maintained sufficiently to meet the demands in the restricted hours, though this demand has been greater than usual. ' This morning the supply was put on half an hour earlier, at' 7.30 o'clock. This extension will be continued to-morrow. Last night the gas was again cut off, from 6 o'clock, but for most people the inconvenience was not so great as on the previous evening, since they had had time to make alternative arrangements for lighting and cooking. Some people complain that they are unable to get the gas even from fcho time when it is turned on. This, the company explains, is due to the fact •that a number of consumers have been allowing the gas to burn out before turning off the taps, so that the pipes have become filled with air, which. must be expelled before the gas can be used again in the morning. The Kittawa is still held up at Miramar .Wharf, and no further attempt has been made to have htr cargo of coal discharged. ; -
