Hs was later drafted to Wellington, : alnd from there proceeded to Christchurch, where he. was appointed chief detective. From •'Christ-church he went to Dutaedin, where he resigned after about 17 years' service. On arrival in Auckland, he took . over the Wavertey Hotel, where he resided for about 14 yoaTs. The staff, of the Waterworks Department of the Wellington . City Council met yesterday, and made a presentation to Mr. R. Fair*, who has severed his connection with the Corporation. In responding, Mr. Fairo said he had left the council employ simply for the'reason, that there was no facility given for advancement in the service. A classification system was, in his opinion, urgently, required. Detective-Sergeant J. Siddells, of the Wanganui Police Force, will retire from duty oil 3th July, having .been granted three months' leave prior to resigning from tihe Force on pension. •Detective Siddells has- not attained the age limit, but has the service entitling him to a pension. He has offered his services to the Justice Department as a temporary clerk 1 till after; the war, a-s he considers • that he ought to do something to assist, in. this.time of stress.' Detective Siddells joined the Armed Constabulary in 1877, serving two years in that force. He then transferred to the police, and went to Hawkes Bay, serving in iliat district at various stations as constable and sergeant till January, 1905. In that year ho was transferred to the detective branch, and sent to Wanganui, where he has been stationedever since. ' * . .
