FURTHER BAD WEATHER COMING
Yesterday was by no means all that could be desired meteorologically, but 'fc was good weather compared to that which to-day has been favoured with. ■ Some little rain fell yesterday morning, but it was not until about 3 o'clock in the afternoon that it began in real earnest. The wind which blew : steadily from the north on Saturday veered to the south during the night, and, to-day, increased to a boisterous southerly gale with an obvious touch of the Antarctic about it, and with intermittent rain squalls. A westerly die-, turbance passed in the South • ;_during Saturday, and an intense cyclone is now centred in the vicinity of'Hokianga. Stormy weather is general over most tof the country, and enow ia reported on the higher levels in the South. Westerly and north-westerly gales stilL rule in.the Ear North. ■ .' . . '■•.•
The official forecast iscued to-Jay 'by the Weather Office ia for southerly winds, strong •to gale, to the northward 'of Kawhia and East Cape, heavy southeasterly gales thence to Westport and' Bank's Peninsula, and 6trong and variable with easterlies prevailing elsewhere. Very heavy seas are probable on .the East Coast, northward of Bank's Peninsula,'in Cook Strait, and off the west coast of the North Island. Seas are likely to be heavy off-shore on the west coa6t of the South Island, and rough seas are pr<jb-! able elsewhere. Stormy weather is'forecasted, accompanied by heavy rain, over the North Island, and in the north-easti districts of the South Island. Rivers will be flooded in the NorTK, and warnings for verjr high floods have been issued'to ail stations in the East Coast districts (Napier and Gisborne). Snow is probable on the higher levels in the South, and although the thermometer will drop further, conditions will become milder after about 36 hours. ■ ■ '
