WHICH ARMY?

SALVATION OFFICERS' APPEAL.

Two Salvation Army officers, Captain T. G. Shilton and Lieut. -Walter Marsden, were amting the appellants whose names were dealt with by the First Wellington Military Service Board to-day. They were treated the same as clergy of other denominations.

Colonel James H. Bray, of the Army Headquarters Staff,- said it- would be impossible to replace any officers now called up. They had arrived at a point where no more men . could be spared. Marsden was a probationary lieutenant,, between 25 and 30 years of age. and stationed at Georgetown, in the South Island. He had charge of a district over a radius of forty miles, and was without an assistant. He was a fully accredited officer, with power to conduct services, but without power to solemnise marriages. A certificate recommending exemption had been obtained from the Minister of Defence. Appellant had been an officer for about-a year. Twenty-six out of ninety-nine Army officers eligible for military duties had gone to the front. , .

Decision was reserved sine die, appellant to remain in his present position. The case will be .Teviewed before the Second Division is called for. •

In reference to the appellant Shilton, Colonel Bray stated that he held the rankoorf r captain, and was stationed a.t Pahiatiia.j a 'fairly large -district. Captain. Shilton had'an assistant, but the latter, if-called up; would not.be appealed for.

The decision was worded the same as in the previous case.
