Lance-Corporal Henry M. T. T.. Levinge, of the New Zealand Bifle Brigade, who was killed in action on 17th "Maich, was a son of Staff-Surgeon ,H. Levinge, of Wairoa, and a nephew of Dr. Levinge, of the staff of the Porirua Mental Hospital. He took part in the Somme battle, and came through it with only a scratch on the cheek from a shrapnel bullet. Deceased was the third member of the Levinge family to give his life in the present war The first to fall was Sir Richard Levinge, Bart., of Knockdrin Castle, Mullingar, Ireland, which has been the seat of the Levinge family for 200 years. Sir Richard was in the First Life Guards. Another, a lieutenant in the Imperial Army, was killed eight months ago. Dr. Levinge has received a letter from a comrade of his son's in the Rifle Brigade, expressing the warm sympathy of the corps in his loss. . . Wellington's Fire Brigade has a "ladder 65ft long, but it is 17 years old,'and quite out of date iv these times. Six men are required to manipulate it, four turning the cranks that raise it, and two attend- [ ing to the overhead gear. In a big fire six experienced men cannot well be spared for such work as this. The council has recognised this, and has now on order an 85ft ladder, which can be operated by one man, the elevation being done by power supplied from a dynamo. Unfortunately the'manufacture of the new'apparatus was interrupted by the outbreak of the war, and it is probable that some further time will'elapse before delivery, of the new machine is obtained.
