The . steamer sailed outwards for Timara, but stuck fast on a sandbank on the bar. For an hour ■ she layiithere,. and there were grave fears as to her being wrecked. The steamer, however, ' gradually worked her way throough the- sand and managed to'get to sea. She then lay outside for an hour, apparently to make an examination to find out whether she had sprung any leak as the result of the grounding,--- and then signalled all well, and left for her destination. It is understood that the recent flood in the river had brought down a sand banft on the bar, in the line of the beacons. As a result ;of the mishap, which ■ luckily assumed no larger proportions, there ■were no further shipping movements that tide HINEMOA AT FAEEWELL SPIT The Government steamer Hinemoa was at anchor of! Farewell Spit yesterday,. waiting for an improvement in the -weather in order to effect a landing at Kahurangi Point lighthouse, which is very difficult to do in any! but the very calmest weather. The vessel will probably not arrive back in Wellington until Saturday next, after which' sho will lay up hero for overhaul A full cargo has been booked by the Hula, ■which is to leave Wellington this afternoon for Wanganni, after being laid up in the stream at Wellington for a considerable length of time. Mr. Brown rejoined the vessel as engineer yesterday, and Captain W. Deiley is in command ' >. j The scow Haere, which put into Onehunga some days ago in a leaking condition, went alongside the wharf on Tuesday, and discharged her cargo of railway iron into a Union Cora- ■ nany's steamer. After she has been inspected the Haere will go on the hard for repairs The Tarawera encountered very heavy -weather on the trip from Lyttelton to Dunedln on • Sunday, and consequently did not reach the latter port until 9.30 p.m. The vessel cleared Lyttelton at 6 p.m. en Saturday, and immediately she reached the Heads ran into a strong westerly gale. The Tarawera had a hard battle against the storm, and made very little headway After passing Akaroa the wind veered to the east, and bjew with hurricane force from that direction. . Heavy rain squalls ' prevailed throughout the passage, while a very hiah sea was running, and the vessel buf- . feted about considerably. She sustained no damage. The Tarawera occupied 27J hours to accomplish tho passage of 204 miles Bound from Wanganui to Lyttelton tho Awahou passed the Heads at 1.10 p.m. yesterday. The Ngahere and Eosamond both bound west, also passed the Heads at about 2.30 p.m. , Owing to the accumulation of cargo at Blenheim the Opawa will make one more trip to Wellington before laying up for repairs. The vessel is due at Wellington to-morrow, and will saiTforßlenheim the same evening *T>umDine operations are in full swing in conKon %\tl raising the e X -dredge Progress which recently sank at her moorings m Carey ' liav saya tSie Dunedin Star)) while undergoing "iterations to fit her for cargo carrying.
