Whether slates are as good as writing pads was a question discussed: at. the meeting- of the Education Board to-day. The remarks made were the result of communications from certain school committees regarding the use of slates. The Chairman (Hon. J. G. W. Aitkenj said that if slates were used it would be necessary for the teachers to see that sanitary methods were insisted upon. The Chief Inspector (Mr. T. R. Fleming) pointed out that a writing pad which cost threepence now was only half the size of one that could be purchased for tile same money before the war. The board decided to offer no objection to the use of slates, after the Chief Inspector had expressed the view that their use did not affect the vvqting of the scholars.
On Saturday evening next what promises to be a very interesting debate will take place at Victoria College : "That the granting of Home Rule to Ireland is in the best interests of the British Empire." The debate is the, resuit of a previous Imperial discussion^
