TO PREVENT ACCIDENTS
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In connection with the recent I'a.tal tram accident in Auckland, may I ask you to invite discussion through the columns of The Post on the feasibility of the following suggestion? Some of tho taxi-cabs plying for hire on ' the streets are fitted with small round mirrors which enable the chunffeuvs to see the roadway behind them. Could not an. appliance of this kind be inst-a-lled on the tramcar at the motorman's left side to enable him to see that no person is attempting to board or alight from the cars at .the time of restarting? Very many of tho regular passengers of the cars are elderly and infirm persons, and these people run a great risk when the cars are crowded and the conductors are so wedged inside amongst the passengers collecting fares, so that they have to start the cars without seeing that the steps are. clear of passengers. The cost of fitting all tramcars with similar mirrors would be negligible, and the use of some such simple appliance may safeguard the lives of many persons.—l am, etc., J. H. G. ROWLEY.
The annual meeting of the New Zealand Chib, held 'yesterday, was presided over by Mr. Chas. E. Wheeler (president). There was a moderate attnedance of members. Members expressed their appreciation of the efforts of the committee during the year by unanimously re-electing them to office. The election resulted as follows: —President, Mr. Chas. 35. Wheeler; past presidents, Messrs. F. S. Pope and K..H. Webb; vice-presidents, Messrs. W. E. Spencer and R. B. Davis; committee, Messrs. R, J. Aekins, E. S. Baldwin, C. M. Luke, W. M. Page, and C. R. Smith; lion, auditor, Mr. D. E. BeaglehoJe; lion, secretary and treasurer, Mr. Edward P. Lambert (in place of Mr. G. 0. Sutton, enlisted). It was decided: "That the club carry on for the ensuing year without charging any subscription to members. This is in view of the particular circumstances which obtained in the past year and will probably continuuo this year, and in view of tsie fact that the balance of the funds jfn hand would be sufficient to carry over for 12 months." A vote of thanks was passed to the press, to the president, officers, and committee for their work during the year.
