O'BRIEN AND O'ROURKE FOUND
GUILTY
SENTENCED TOELEVEN MONTHS' . - IMPRISONMENT.
(BT TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) ■ . CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. P.. C. Webb, James O'Brien, and Peter O'Rourke were'charged on remand to-day with making seditious utterances on the West Coast. ,
The case against O'Brien was taken first. Accused applied for a trial by jury. The Magistrate said : " You have not the right in this case." An application for a trial at Greymouth was. refused.
' O'Brien was convicted, the Magistrate saying that all men would like to see the war finished, and no doubt accused was sincere in his - sentiments, but his utterance had tended to interfere with recruiting. A sentence of imprisonment for eleven months was parsed. O'Rourke was then similarly charged. The Magistrate said accused had brought no evidence that, he had not uttered the words complained of, and sentenced him to eleven months' imprisonment. Later. In the 'charge against P. C. Webb, an adjournment was granted till 9th May.
