OBITUARY
MR. HAROLD ASHTON.
.■Cabled advice has been received by Sir. Bert Royle, New Zealand representative of J. C. Williamson, Ltd., of the death in. Melbourne- of Mr. Harold Ashton, associate director of the firm. The late Mr. Ashton -was well known a.nd highly popular throughout New Zealand. -He was born in Adelaide, fiftyeight years ago. He .joined the sla.ff of the Adelaide Register in 1879, and was for "a "time engaged in the profession of •journalism. He first came to New Zealand with Hugo's Buffalo Minstrels. .Subsequently he" -became advance agent for J. C, Williamson, and then general itburing*'manager.. ,H© visited America ;fpr J^'firnr, and secured a number of -very^ successful plays which, were pro"duced in, Australia. In 1913 he was ap.pointedj manager for J. C. Williamson in .South Africa, but he returned to Australia in 1915 to become associate director \oi the firm. Though known throughout ,'Australasia as Harold Ashton, his real ;nam6 was Harold Ashton Jordan. His wife, who died in 1890, was Miss Ruby iClifton, a well-known pianist. For some ;fJme past Mr. Ashton, had suffered from ■an affection of the throat, his affliction "being so serious that his medical advisers ■deemed it.inadvisable to operate.
