BOWLING

EASTBOURNE TOURNAMENT WON

BY NEWTOWN.

The final game in the Eastbourne Tournament was playad on last between , teams comprising Newtqwn (Robins, Grenside, Smith, and Spiers (s) and Petone (Cowie, Hutchison, M'Ewan, and Coles Js). The green was slightly on the flieavy side after the recent rains, but was very true and drawing well on both hands. A good exposition of bowling was given, particularly by the men of the Newtown team, whose drawing was very accurate, they scoring twelve to their opponents' two on the first nine heads. Petone then made a brilliant recovery, and was only three down on tho twelfth head, the scores being 12^-9. Spiers and his men, however, were not to be denied, and they had practically full control of the game until tha twentieth head, when the scores were 22—12, the final head not being played. Cheers were given both for ; the victors as well as the losers. The,,. Mayor-elect (Mr. Levi), in presenting' the trophies, commented on the sporting qualities that had been shown by both teams. The toasts of winners and losers were drunk to musical honours, a,nd replies were made by Messrs. Spiers and Grenside (Newtown) and Coles and M'Ewan (Petone), the remarks from both visiting skips being to the effect that it was the most enjoyable tourney they had ever participated in.
