SERIOUS POSITION

As indicated in the; report of the City Engineer and--Tramways-Manager (Mr. W. H. Morton), the* posilioii-of the city services is serious.. The lighting depaitment has twojmonths' .supp]res; of fuel, if supplemented by coke, as-at present, but the tramway .department -has only three weeks"supply.... 11^ may become necessary to further cirrtaJLof even stop the tramway services' altogether in order to keep the electric light in operation. "Beginning .fa-morrow," *22nd April, there will be a drastic cTirtiijlment of the Wellington tramway- services:, On Sundays the only, cars funning- will be between Newttjwn ; and, Lambton Station via Courtenay-place-, and: between Hataitai and Courtenay-place via the tunnel. A ten. miiiutes' service will be maintained between 12 noon.and 10 p.m. to Hataitai, 1- and - between' 8.30 4.m. arid 10 p.m. to llataitai.' There will be no suburban traffic except to the districts mentioned ,and certain •morning, Services. Hataitai has been included", because people are prohibited ' from ■• walking through the tunnel, and, if-there were. no cars, would be able to rSach town only by a roundabout route.Fares on the Sunday cars will-be:— Newtown-Lambton, 6d; ,'Hataitai-Court-enay-place 3d.

On week days r commencing on Monday next, the usual services up. to 9 a.m. and between 4.45 p.m. and 7 p.m. will be maintained, but between 9 a.m. and 4.45 p.m. and 7 p.m. and ,11, .p.m. .the services will be greatly reduced; for instance, on the Island Bay, Lyall Bay, Brooklyn, Oriental Bay, and- Botanical Gardens routes, instead of a ten-minute service, there will be cars every 20 minutes. The tunnel service will be every ten minutes, and thero are other alterations.

The public are advised to familiarise themselves with the details of the new time-table as set out in an advertisement in this issue.
