WHAT SHE LOOKED LIKE.
Uncle Sam's steamers erasing the Atlantic had enormous stars • and stripes painted on both sides of their hulls, bow, iiincl stern, and between these flags thb space was occupied by the ship's name. At night brilliant lights illuminato the whole scheme. Tho first steamer to docorate herself like this was signalled by a British cruiser:
"Whai ship, in that?" ' •■ The reply came: '."United States mail steamer. So-and-So." , ' i ■..•'■
Said the cruiser: "Thanks. Thought you were a Christmas tree out of Beaton."
