Intimation was received at Bluff last week that as Sir Joseph Ward, who has . represented Lake County on the Bluff Harbour Board, was not renominated, the Returning Officer had declared the only nomirieiß, Mr. Peter Reed; duly elected as the Lake County member of i the board. It will probably be remem-. bered (states the Southland Times) that Mr. Reed contested the seat with Sir ■ 1 Joseph WaTd three years ago, when, a£ter personally visiting the districts and addressing the electors, Sir Joseph was returned by 305 votes'to 219. Provision is made for the consent of any nominee by telegram, which, of course, ; covers cablegrams, and although Sir , Joseph's friends were expecting his consent, it did not come to hand. No\ doubt this circumstance will be ac- ■ cepted by some people as evidence that: Sir Joseph does not intend to return. : , to. the Dominion. ! Before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., *i the Magistrate's Court to-day, the ZCV I landia Co-operative Woodwaro Company, • 1 Ltd., proceeded against Marble Bar, Ltd.; to recover the sum of £79 1* 6d for the supply, of chairs and tile-top tables. In defence, it was alleged that the tables had not been made according to sample, and that the workmanship was defective. The case was proceeding when The Post went to press. Mr. H. E. Evans appeared for the plaintiffs and Mr. A. M. Blair, for the defendant. The dogs used by the Antarctic exploration party under Sir Ernest Sliackleton arrived in Wellington to-day, a.nd are to be housed in the Newtown Zoo. It is understood that the Zoo Trill become their permanent abode While acting' as master of ceremonies in St. Mary's Cathedral at Sale, Gippsland, Victoria, on the evening of 4th ■ April, in the office of Tenebrae, Very. Rev. Father O'Brien, administrator of the Cathedral, was seized with an apoplectic fit. He was removed to the bishop's sacristy, where he received the last sacraments of Uie church. Dr. Hagenauer on arrival pronounced lite extinct. Subsequently Bishop Phelan announced Father O'Brien's death to a large congregation, ,who were deeply moved. It being holy week, all tho priests of the diocese were in attendance, including deceased's brother, Rev. Father O'Brien, of Omeo.
