SIXTH BALLOT

4812 MEN CALLED UP

TO FILL REINFORCEMENT

GAPS

TO-DAY'S SPECIAL GAZETTE

LIST OF WELLINGTON NAMES.

The result of the sixth, ballot taken under the Military Service Act from among members of ths First Division of the Expeditionary Force Reeerve for filling tho vacancies in th« 30th Reinforcements, mobilising two months hence, was issued in the form of a Gazette Extraordinary at 10 o'clock this morning. The vacancies have been caused by tho failure of voluntary recruiting to produce the required number of men, the actual shortage being 1203. To meet this 4812 have been called up, the purpose of drawing four men for every vacancy to be filled being to allow sufficient margin lor exemptions on various grounds and rejections ,on account of medical unfitness. Formerly only three men iwere drawn for every vacancy to be filled, but in view of the tightening up of the medical regulations it was decided to increase, the proportion to four to one, and this was applied for the first time in the present ballot. In future ballots the proportion of Reservists drawn will be the same.

The numbers 'of men drawn in the i.various ballots to date have been as follow :— Ist Ballot, Nov., 1916 4000 2nd Ballot, pec, 1916 3000 3rd Ballot, Jan., 1917 ..„ 3600 4th Ballot (double). Feb., 1917 ... 6867 sth Ballot, March, 1917 4503 6th Ballot, April, 1917 4813 Total 26,782 In the six ballots that have already taken place, 26,782 members of the First Division have thus been called up to fill some 8500 vacancies in the 23rd, 24th, ,25th, 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th, and 30th Reinforcements. The First Division, which originally totalled 84,986 men, has also been considerably drawn upon •by voluntary enlistment. At the .conclusion of the sth ballot on 7th March the total number remaining in the Reserve was 55,419. This number has now been further reduced by the 4812 men called up in the 6th ballot and. the voluntary enlistment of First Division men since 7th March. The total number now remaining in the First ■ Division is thus below 50,100.^ 1 The complete list of names of men I called up under the 7th ballot in the Wellington City, Manawatu, and Wairarapa recruiting districts to fill vacancies in the 30th Reinforcements is as follows (the asterisk against any name signifies previous voluntary enlistment) : — ■ i No. 5 (WELLINGTON) RECRUITING DISTRICT.
