PETONE'S FINANCES

PRELIMINARY REPORT FOR 1916.17.

Mr. J. W. M'Ewan, Mayor of Petone, stated last evening that the treasurer had furnished a preliminary balancesheet for the year just ended. The figures were not. yet complete and might be subject to considerable correction. The'receipts iv. the general account were £19,797, the chief items being:—Rates £7022, dog tax £138, licenses £232, shop rants £327, recreation ground £120, materials £130, Government subsidy £112 (undsr this heading £338 was still owing to the council). The year started with a debit balance of £8898, which had increased during the year to £10,794. At present the Mayor was hot prepared to say wherein the increased debit ba.l--ance was to be accounted for; probably there were outstanding rates and other items. Some of the items of expenditure were:—Fire Board £411, Recreation Ground x £64l, sanitary service £905, and interest on same £113, sewerage material £391, allowance ■to employees on active service £74, boat harbour £95, beach improvements £235, wages £2087, hospital levy £1156, interest on temporary loans £298, street'lighting £405, transferred to library account 5114, interest account £1174. "■

■In the waterworks account, besides transferring £300 to the general account, there was a small credit balance of £3 8s 2d.' The chief item of receipts was Tates £1618, and the chief items of expenditure were wages £427, sundries £165, material £161, general account £300,' interest £1200, :■.. \ :

The gas-working account showed a nominal debit of £4002, but this was really, a.credit of £1474, as the sum of £4531 had been spent on new plant—wages, retort house, and setting £1116, .new meters £324, retort house, retorts, and setting £1277, new holders £1814—and also the debit balance of £946 from last year had been included on the expenditure side this year. This made a total of £5476, and if from this was deducted the debit of £4002, a balance to credit of £1474 was shown. ■■
