AN ANOMALOUS POSITION
.Captain F. A. Macindoe, Secretary of the Merchant Service Guild, recently mentioned to members of the Shopowners' Federation the question of granting to ships' officers recognition of an eight-hour day and payment for overtime. Captain Macindoe pointed out that frequently the men before the mast earn considerably larger wages, through payment for overtime, than the officers on the very vessels on which the seamen are employed. He instances the following cases which he is prepared to verify: No. 1 example, for one month —First mate, £19; lamp-trimmer same ship, £30 No 2 example, for one 'month—First mate, £10; lamp-trimmer same ship, £25. No. 3 example, for one month—First mate, £22 12s sd; second mate, £16 Is 6d; third mate, £15 2s 8d; A.B. same ship, £18 13s Id; A.B. same ship, £18 11s 3d; A.B. same ship, £18 6s Id. Captain Macindoe stated: "Four officers have already gone into the fo'oastle, and it will not, be long before there are more, with no worry, no responsibility, no appearance to keen up. I understand these conditions were given to the seamen because they were the rates on. the Australian coast, and I am very glad they have such good conditions."
