VICE-REGAL.
The Governor paid a visit to Narrow Neck Camp, Auckland, yesterday. Tomorrow, His Excellency will lay the foundation stone of the new Auckland Children's Hospital.
Mr. C. J. Gwynnehaa been appointed Deputy Registrar of Marriages, .Births, and Deaths, at Courtenay-place, and Mr. J. W. Holland at Feathereton.
At the last meeting of the Board of Directors, Mr. C. M. Luke was elected first vice-president, and Mr. C. S. Falconer second vice-president of the Wellington V.M.C.A.
Mr. A. C. Mitchell, M.T.Mech.E.,, superintendent engineer for Messrs. J. J. Niven and Co., has been elected president of the Wellington Ironmasters' Association in place of Mr W. Cable, who has resigned.
Four V.M.C.A. workers in Mesopotamia have been mentioned in despatches —Mr. L. Dixon, a Canadian; Mr. B. A. M'Clair, an American;, Mr. T. E. Riddle, a New Zealander, and Mrs. Webley, an English woman.
' The- Judges of the Native Land Court have been appointed to districts as follows:—Akaroa and South Island, Judge R. N. Jones j WaiEato-Maniapoto, Judge C. E. MacCormick; Aotea, Judge J. W. Browne; Tairawhiti, Judge 'M. Gilf odder; Tokerau, Judge A. G. Holland; Wairariki, Judge T. H. Wilson. The appointments take effect as from Wedtfesday of this week.
Mr. Cnthbert George Peart, who died at his residence at Khandallah last Tuesday, was for some years in business in Nelson. He was a native of Newcastle-on-Tyne, 67 years of age, and came out to New Zealand 38 years ago. The cause of death was heart trouble. The deceased has left a widow and two sons, one of whom is at the front. . The interment was made at Karori yesterday, Eev. James Gumming officiating at the graveside.
" Since the close of the season, Messrs. D. Madder and R. B. Magee have gone into camn," states the annual report of the Wellington Rugby Union. "Both are well known for the sterling work on behalf of their respective clubs spread over many years, and while the Empire's call Is -uppermost in the thoughts of all, we cannot but express regret at the loss of two members of committee who had already made themselves almost invaluable, and we can only hope that in the future we shall welcome them back again."
Mr. F. J. Chisholm, who has been chief mail clerk at Auckland for the past seven years, has been promoted to the position of assistant postmaster at the Chief Post Office,-Wellington. Prior to leaving Auckland for the South to take up his new-duties, Mr. Chisholm was the recipient of a purse of sovereigns, the presentation being made by Mr. J. C. Williamson, chief postmaster, on behalf iof the Auckland Post Office staff. Mr. Chisholm succeeds Mr. R. iD'. Kelly, who has been promoted to the position of senior inspector of South Island post offices. i
The directors and staff of Messrs. Hope Gibbons, Sons, and J. B. darkson, Ltd., entertained Messrs. R. Rickardj T. Gollins, P. Bowers, and lA. ,Izett, four of the firm's employees who,have enlisted,- at a " social" in the company's new warehouse, Inglewood-place. last evening. Proceedings commenced with dinner, and at the subsequent conversazione Mr. J. B. Clarkson presented each of the soldiers with a wristlet watch, and extended to them the best wishes of the members of the firm and the staff for their safe return.
