Exactly what is the best variety of timber for piles that have to stand the onslaughts of the sMpworm (teredo navalis) is largely a matter for experts, who, however, even in 1 this simple matter, liko doctors, disagree. An object lesson on the question has been brought under the notice of the Marlborough Express representative by Mt. 11. M. Reader, chairman of the Havelock Harbour Board, wherein the matter seems to bo settled for all time. In what has been known as tho Old Mill Wharf, Havelock, now no more, some 50 piles were taken out. These had been in the water for 48 years, plenty of time for the. teredos to make good. They were maitai piles, and when examined were found to be entirely tree of the worm, and as good as when they had their first immersion. Some 50 yards away stood the commercial wharf of Havelock, tho piles built of the heart of birch. They were found to be riddled through with the shipworms, and they had. only twelve years to operate. The relative merits of birch and maitai for work necessitating submersion in water can no longer, in face of the facts mentioned above, be debated.
