CITY COUNCIL MEETING

The City Council met last night/ The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided and others present were: Councillors W. H. B. Barber, G. Frost, J. Godber, J. ffutcheson, A. R. Atkinson. W H. Bennett, T. Bush, A. Veitch, R. A. Wrigfit, M.P., W. T. Hildreth, J. 'Fitzgerald, M. F. Luckie, W. J. Thompson, L. M'Kenzie.

It was decided that the rearrangement of the water supply to-streets at Island Bay, as recommended by the City Engineer, be given effect to.

The City Engineer was instructed, to re-arrange the permanent alignment to Karori-road from the Botanical Gardens southward, in accordance with the plan prepared by him. The work, is to go on without delay.

The City Engineer was instructed to make provision on thife year's street works estimates for the following requirements at Wadestown, as requested by the Wadestown Municipal Electors' Association :—(1) Concreting steps Weld-street and the paths connecting them, and the construction of water channels on either side of the steps; (2) repair of Wade-street extension.

It was reported that the ratepayer who complained of the blocking of the access to his property at Maida Valeroad recently, by the construction of a motor shed on the unformed road reservation, had replied that he could not accede to either of the alternative proposals submitted by the council, and also asked that, the former access be reinstated. The committee recommended that the previous decision, of the council be adhered to, and this was earned.

Consent was granted for the erection, of two dwellings on a large section of land at Carlton-street, Melrose, the rear dwelling having a frontage of 10ft instead of 20ft: This proposal, in the opinion of the City Engineer, permits of a better subdivision than would result if strict compliance with the bylaws were insisted upon.

Consent was also granted for the construction of five crossings over the footpath on the Hutt-road into a garage proposed to be erected, subject to the owners entering into an agreement embodying the conditions fixed by the City Engineer to safeguard the proper condition of the street channel.

A monthly permit to drive a private motor delivery van was granted to a, youth who is under twenty-one years of age, subject to the applicant paying the usual license fee. SPECIAL BUSINESS. Prior to the commencement of the ordinary meeting, a special meeting wasl held at which special orders were passed declaring Selwyn-terrace to be a -public street, and substituting Margaret-street as the name of the street now comprising Princes-street and Regent-streeb, Wades^ town.
