Three brothers met. on the Wellington wharves the.other day after having been separated for' 53 years. During that time they had not seen anything of each other. The ages of the brothers are 78, 71, and 68, making a total of 217 years between them. The occasion of the meeting was to welcome the eldest brother who had come across from' Sydney to see the other two. The eldest and the one 71 years of age' were amongst the first diggers on the Hokitika rush in 1864. Another interesting fact in connection with the meeting of the two eldest brothers was that they did the same journey at the same time as the late Et. Hon. R. S. .Seddon over the mountains to the Waimea Plains. The eldest brother has made money and is now retired, living about 500 miles from Sydney, the brother 71 years of age was for 40 years on the New Zea- | land railways,' and is now a retired stai tionmaster, while the third and youngest I is a farmer in the Taranaki district. Consideration was given by the Palmerston North Borough Council on Tuesday (says the Manawatu Standard) to a proposal by Dr. Adams, Government astronomer, to alter New Zealand mean time so that it would be exactly twelve hours in advance "of Greenwich instead of 11£ hours. Dr. Adams said this was part of a scheme to have the time of all countries at exact hours froni Greenwich. This would conform to the International agreement, and conversion of New Zealand time to English time would be of the simplest nature. An event taking place in London at 5 p.m. would then correspond with 5 a.m. here. It . would only be necessary to put all the clocks on. for half an hour permanently summer and winter to bring New Zealand into line. Dr. Adams gave particulars of other countries that had adopted the exact hour niethod of calculation from Greenwich. The council did not feel competent to express an opinion on the subject, considering it a matter for the Government, and-it was decided, on Councillor Crabb's motion, to reply to that effect. . : V .. , . i :.,'•;:; .')'■
