FUNDS FOR SICK AND WOUNDED

HOW THEY STAND,

The Minister for Defence (Hon. Sil'J. Allen) informed the chairman of the Advisory Board of the Patriotic WaiRelief Societies (Mr. L. 0. H. Tripp) that he had had the Sick and 'Wounded Comforts Fund dissected, and found the position in respect of the quota contribution to be us follows: —

Total contributions to date £17,669 18s, remittances to England and Egypt £11,637, balance in hand £6032 18s. Of the £6032 18s, some £306 19s 4d has been- received since September, 1916, the month that the general. contributions from the board ceased. The High Commissioner reported that the following balances were on hand on 30th November :—High Commissioner Comforts Fund £11.337 4s 7d, New Zealand Contingent Association Comforts Fund £976 Is, special objects £233 11s 3d, Hospital Fund £1 19s Bd, Red Cross Fund £3674 11s 2d.

Pending the decision of the- Advisory Board as to whether it was prepared to agree to the payment for the erection of the social hall for convalescent soldiers at Hornchurch being made a charge against its funds, the High Commissioner had been instructed to pay the amount from the balance of £11,337 4s 7d above referred to. Should the board decide that it cannot provide for the erection of such halls from its funds, the amount would, of course, be refunded by the Government to the High Commissioner Comforts Fund Account. In Egypt Colonel Chaytor held Hie following balances :—Sick and Wounded Fund £1100, Red Cross .Fund £190. Colonel Cliaytor's monthly expenditure was not great, being £58 15s 4d and £67 13s 9d respectively for the month of November. A considerable sum remained in hand for the purchase of extra comforts for the sick and wounded, and there seemed to be no necessity for the Board of Advice to provide any further money for February and March.
