IN THE MOST OF PLENTY
MASTERTON'S DEVELOPMENT
MASTERTON, being in the centre of the vast Wairarapa district, is fittingly described as being "in the midst of plenty." Both the town and the district immediately surrounding it have flourished tq, an extent scarcely realised by Wellington people, and the story of their growth as told in this special issue should be of extreme interest. The establishment of the various Wairarapa settlements is traced, and due tribute is paid to the pioneers from whose efforts the present prosperity has sprung. The articles deal with Masterton as it was and as it is, and lay special stress on its needs for the future. The early deviation of the Rimutaka line is justly regarded as all-important, and, after that, better communication within the district itself, which would bring about closer settlement—a breaking-up of the big estates now existing out towards the coast.
