WORK RESUMED TO-DAY
INCIDENT ON DEEF-SEA
STEAMER
The situation in the waterfront was somewhat easier to-day. At 7.45 a.m. the men lined vp —coal-carriers and general cargo-workers—and practically all the labour available was engaged. A call for men to work one of the Home steamers, on which the trouble regarding "dumping" occurred on Monday, was, however, unsuccessful. On nearly all other vessels in port cargo operations were- earned out, although restricted in some instances owing to the shortage of labour. Oil and geneiial cargo came steadily out of the Edward Luckenbach nil the morning, while more frozen meat was loaded on another deep-sea vesse]. The i Union Steam Ship Company declined to take anything but perishable cargo, owing to dearth of labour and the accumulation of goods on account of the stoppage of work yesterday. Generally the wharves presented an animated spectacle, as there is a large amount of shipping in the port at present. This afternoon there was a further un-looked-for development. At 1 o'clock a call was made for the men who had previously been unloading on the vessel concerned in the "dumping" incident, and most of them came forward. They were sent aboard with an additional gang to re-commence unloading operations, and by about 1.45 p.m. the hatches were off ready for clearing the cargo. The first cargo to come ashore was white lead and kindred articles which were placed "stages"—small square platforms. These may be called "neutral" gear, as they are neither slings nor nets. At 2.15 p.m. the foreman asked the men if they were prepared to use nets, and they declined to do so. Work ceased, and the men left the vessel. Operations had not resumed on the ship when The Post went to press.
Some slight trouble occurred on another deep-sea steamer, as the result of which the men were put off. This afternoon, however, practically the same gangs were re-engaged and resumed the cargo-discharging work on the vessel.
