Sir Joseph Ward said 'that the movement in New Zealand was initiated 'by the women of Dunedin under Dr Truby King's guidance. The Plunket nurses had done valuable work. The women of Britain had done such excellent work in freeing men for the firing line that it would be impossible to resist the extension of the franchise to them after the war.
