MAGISTRATE'S COURT
To-day's cases at the Magistrate's Court were heard by Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M. A first-offending v inebriate, was dealt with in the usual lenient manner. A returned convalescent soldier, named Wilfred Russell, was fined 20s for using obscene language, and was ordered to be handed over to the military authorities. On a charge of drunkenness he was dealt with as a first offender. Jan Smit, a Dutchman, who indulged in language calculated to offend was penalised in the sum of 10s, and ordered to be returned to his ship. On a charge of drunkenness he was convicted and discharged In the case of Joseph Whitworth, also charged with using obscene language, the offence was a more aggravated one, and the defendant was .ordered to pay 40s or, reriiain in gaol 'foivseven days. CIVIL ACTIONS. In the Magistrate's Court to-day Mr. W G. Riddell, S.M., entered judgment for plaintiff by default in the. following civil actions:—F. Waddle, £.7 7s, costs 23s 6d; same v. Thomas Gordon, £2 3s, costs 10s; Veitch and Allan v Stuart Forbes, £2, costs 10s; same v. James Middleton, £3 2s 3d, costs 10s; same v W. Keegan, £2 Is sd, costs 10s; The M'Arthui; Milliken Structural Engineering Co:, Ltd., v. Brown and Johnston, 15s ■ costs only ; T and W. Young, Ltd., v Jno. Oliver, £19 8s 3d, costs £3 14s 6d. JUDGMENT SUMMONSES. Judgment summons cases were dealt with as under:—A Haulon was ordered to pay the D.I.C. the sum of 25s' by 15th February, in default undergo 24 hours' imprisonment; George Thomas Smith was- ordered to pay Rouse, Black, and Son the sum of £7 lls 6d by 15th February, or serve . 7 days' . imprisonment.
