BRUTAL ASSAULT ALLEGED
CONSTABLE SERIOUSLY INJURED.
SETTLING A DOMESTIC QUARREL.
Last evening about 9 o'clock a constable named William Fitzgerald was admitted to the Wellington Hospital suffering from more or less severe injuries to his head. It is stated that the constable was on duty in Molesworth-street, and was called in to No. 115, in order to protect a Mrs. Henderson from tho violence of her husband. When the constable entered the house it is alleged that he was violently assaulted by the man Charles Henderson, who struck him on the head repeatedly with a bottle or heavy glass of some sort, rendering him more or less helpless, though still conscious. Police assistance was soon forthcoming responsejto a neighbour's appeal, and Constable Fitzgerald was sent to the Hospital, Henderson being arrested. This morning Henderson was before Mr. W..G. Riddell, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court, charged with having done grievous bodily harm to Fitzgerald. On the application of Detective Cox, the accused was remanded until Thursday, 28th December, bail being allowed— accused in his own bond of £150 and two sureties of £75 each.
Enquiries made at the Hospital to-day show that Constable Fitzgerald was rather badly cut about the head, but until the swelling subsides it is impossible to ascertain the actual extent of his injuries.
